If your quote names a GMSS96, GMEC96, GMVC96, or GCVC96, you are looking at the superseded generation. Those model numbers are gone from Goodman’s current catalog. What Is Goodman’s Furnace Warranty Actually Worth?

The warranty is Goodman’s strongest genuine differentiator, and it is also the thing most often described inaccurately, including on plenty of pages that should know better. Here is what Goodman’s current documents actually say.

Registration is the whole game. Goodman states that without registration, a Goodman gas furnace carries a 5-year parts limited warranty. Register online within 60 days of installation and that becomes a 10-year parts limited warranty, plus a 10-year unit replacement limited warranty on select models. Sixty days, not ninety. That five minutes is worth five years of parts coverage.

The heat exchanger term is stated four different ways, and you should know all four before a salesperson quotes you one of them:

  • Goodman’s current 80% and 90%+ product flyers, and its Product Warranty Overview chart revised 08-25, print the term as a table column reading 20-Year Heat Exchanger Limited Warranty plus a One-Time Heat Exchanger Replacement Limited Warranty.
  • The footnote on those same three documents says 99-Year Heat Exchanger Limited Warranty, good for as long as you own your home.
  • Individual product pages, including the GR9S96 and GRVM97, also say 99-Year.
  • Goodman’s older HVAC Learning Center article still says lifetime heat exchanger limited warranty, good for as long as you own your home.

In practice, 99-year and lifetime resolve to the same thing for a homeowner, since a furnace lasts 15 to 20 years. The one that matters is the 20-year-plus-one-time-replacement wording, because it is the most recent and the most specific, and it is narrower than a flat lifetime promise. If a quote or a comparison site tells you Goodman gives a lifetime heat exchanger warranty, that is stale marketing language. The certificate for your specific model number is the document that controls, and it is the one to ask for.

Unit replacement is 10 years and it is not on every model. This is the coverage that replaces the entire furnace rather than a part if the heat exchanger fails, and it is the term worth the most money. Three more conditions worth knowing before you sign:

  • Goodman does not require you to keep using the installing dealer for later service in order to retain coverage.
  • Goodman offers no warranty coverage on equipment bought by consumers over the internet, including web auctions and telephone sales, unless the unit is installed by a dealer adhering to all applicable federal, state, and local codes, policies, and licensing requirements. For a furnace that lasts 15 to 20 years, 99-year and lifetime amount to the same thing. The 20-year-plus-one-time-replacement wording is the most recent and the narrowest, so treat that as the operative term and ask for the warranty certificate for your exact model number.

How long is the Goodman furnace warranty and what voids it?

Without registration a Goodman gas furnace carries a 5-year parts limited warranty. Register online within 60 days of installation and it becomes a 10-year parts limited warranty plus a 10-year unit replacement limited warranty on select models. Three things commonly go wrong:

  • The 60-day registration window is missed, usually because the homeowner assumed the dealer handled it. Get written confirmation.
  • Unit replacement is not on every model. Goodman’s 80% flyer lists the GR9S80, GR9S80-U, and GD9S80 as N/A for it, so the cheapest 80% models carry parts and heat exchanger coverage only.
  • Goodman offers no warranty coverage on equipment purchased by consumers over the internet, including web auctions and telephone sales, unless the unit is installed by a dealer adhering to all applicable federal, state, and local codes, policies, and licensing requirements. Buying online and installing it yourself voids coverage. Buying online and having a qualifying dealer install it to code keeps it.

Registration is not required in California, Florida, or Québec, and Goodman’s Learning Center article also lists Georgia. Coverage duration in Texas and Florida differs in some cases. Parts coverage never includes the labor to install the part.

Is a 96% Goodman furnace worth the extra cost over an 80% model?

Usually yes, because the premium is small. Stepping from the 80% single-stage GR9S80 to the 96% single-stage GR9S96 costs $600 comparing the floors and $700 comparing the ceilings. A 96% furnace cuts fuel waste from 20 cents on the dollar to 4 cents, lowering a gas heating bill by about 16.7%. A household spending $800 a year on gas heat saves roughly $134 and pays the premium back in about 5 years; at $1,200 a year it is about 3 years, and at $1,800 a year about 2 years. That is much faster than the same upgrade on a premium brand, where the step costs closer to $1,500. Budget separately for PVC venting and any chimney liner work the condensing furnace triggers.

What do Goodman furnace model numbers like GR9S96 and GDVM97 mean?

Goodman renamed its furnace catalog during the R-32 transition and the current codes read left to right:

  • G is the Goodman brand.
  • R is an upflow and horizontal cabinet; D is downflow and horizontal.
  • V is a variable-speed ECM blower; 9 is a multi-speed or 9-speed ECM blower.
  • S is single-stage, T is two-stage, M is modulating.
  • The number is the AFUE class: 80, 92, 96, or 97.
  • A trailing -U is an ultra-low NOx version for California and Colorado emission rules.

So a GR9S96 is an upflow furnace with a 9-speed ECM blower, a single-stage gas valve, and up to 96% AFUE. A GDVM97 is a downflow cabinet with a variable-speed blower and a modulating gas valve at up to 97% AFUE. If your quote names a GMSS96, GMEC96, GMVC96, or GCVC96, that is the superseded generation and is no longer in Goodman’s catalog.
