Primary Data Sources
Contractor Pricing Surveys
Aggregated contractor pricing data from publicly available HVAC installation cost surveys. These surveys capture real-world pricing across different regions, system types, and project complexities. Used to establish base cost ranges (low, mid, high) for each system type.
Last reviewed: March 2026
Industry Cost Reports
Published cost benchmarks from HVAC industry organizations and construction cost databases (e.g., RSMeans-equivalent residential HVAC cost data). These provide standardized installation cost benchmarks that help calibrate our base ranges and validate contractor survey data.

Regional Labor Rate Data
Published regional labor rate surveys and Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) occupational wage data for HVAC mechanics and installers. Used to set and update the regional multipliers that adjust national averages for local market conditions.

Equipment Manufacturer Pricing
Publicly available manufacturer suggested retail pricing (MSRP) and distributor price lists for major HVAC equipment brands. Used to establish the equipment cost component within each system type’s base range and to calibrate brand tier multipliers.

HVAC Trade Association Publications
Technical publications and cost guidance from organizations such as ACCA (Air Conditioning Contractors of America) and AHRI (Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute). Used as reference data to validate sizing guidelines and efficiency tier cost differentials.

Sources We Do Not Use
We explicitly do not use data from lead-generation platforms, contractor referral networks, or affiliate-driven pricing databases. Our data comes from publicly available sources that any homeowner or journalist can independently verify. Learn more about our independence commitment on our About page.
